Magnificent Blencathra and Skiddaw are the main attractions. It is advised that the ascent should be undertaken in fair weather as it requires some tricky navigation, although the descent is along a good track. Hedges, footpaths and fences can be moved and redirected. Within the Lake District itself, there are regional train lines and plenty of buses. The attractive village of Dufton makes a superb base and the walk to dramatic High Cup Nick is a personal favourite. Walk around Tarn Hows Height Gained -300 metres , Distance - 8.4 km, Time -3 hours The small town of Coniston, located close to the shores of the lake of the same name, is dominated by the Old Man of Coniston which soars above the western fringes of the town. Cumbria is the third largest county in England behind North Yorkshire and Lincolnshire with a total land area of 6,768 sq km that's almost three times the size of Luxembourg. It follows good paths and tracks with several stiles. Despite modern transport today, walking is still a very popular pastime in the UK, more so than anywhere else we have traveled to.
